Is Love Poetry Irrelevant?

Gilani Kamran

Whatever has been chosen by my heart

finds its opening in longing for you!

The words I had written on water

See, how they live up now.

In the poem titled In dusty scenario, the poet has given a sorrowful account of the people’s contemporary experience. It is a beautiful poem which deserves a sympathetic reading. The poem identifies Amjad Islam Amjad as a relevant voice of our times. In another poem named The seasons of love, the poet’s involvement is even more pronounced.

The seasons of love

do not believe in worldly commandments.

They don’t believe in the final end,

of a mortal life.

Where oneness gives no fragrance.

That season is long unknown to love!

Only the words’ unflinching hearts

are key to these

these seasons of love.

Fragrance, dream, self- identification and nature imagery form the major signals of this poetry.

Amjad Islam Amjad’s poetic world is not exclusively confined to that environment where love has a circular notation. He is not the poet of an escape-world either. He grows sad when Bosnia suffers. He is heart-broken when people in Kashmir lay down their lives for the dawn of a new era in the Valley. Amjad Islam Amjad has paid rich tribute to the freedom-fighters in Kashmir and feels that the struggle in Kashmir will eventually bring about a new and a brighter era in the world.

Amjad Islam Amjad’s poem on Clinton, the US President, is worth reading.

What Clinton says is true

What Clinton says is always right!

When he says:

Saddam is a savage wild beast.

Gaddafi is all full mad.

And what happens in Eastern Europe

has Russian links

It is necessary to curb the Muslims,

they have grown fundamentalist.

It is the responsibility of every

American diplomat

to watch all this, as it

is American way to keep

a peaceful world,

to put an end to mad

nations and their mad leaders

in the present world….

The poet, however, warns Clinton to be careful, for many such men, who had talked like him in the past, have perished without a trace behind them.
